Bald eagle feeding Frenzy- A wildlife spectacle you have to see.

The Bald Eagle Feeding Frenzy in Campbell River, BC: A Wildlife Spectacle You Have to See

When I moved to BC I was obviously doing a lot of research in terms of what I can expect to see in the Campbell River area for specifically wildlife. I have never heard about the Eagle show before and was pleasantly surprised to see such an remarkable event happening right here on our doorstep. After lots of research I knew this was something I had to see for myself.

I remember a few years ago I was out on a boat and we passed the area the eagles frequent but there was not much going on. I felt disappointed at first thinking to myself this is not what I saw during my research. Back to the computer and after much more research I finally reached out to Josh and Chelsea from Discovery West Adventures. What an honour to meet like minded people who still gets excited after seeing this show after so many years. I could feel the excitement inside of me and from a tiny spark arouse a massive flame that just screamed “ Let’s do it”. So I did and let me tell you it is phenomenal.

We departed from Campbell River in Discovery West’s brand new boat. We rode in style and comfort through breathtaking scenery as the new boat glided effortlessly through the water. The beautiful enclosed boat creates a cozy atmosphere and chatting with fellow passengers is warm and welcoming. Still on our way our Captain Josh spotted a bear on one of the nearby beaches.

It was a gorgeous female cinnamon phase black bear. We got some amazing photos and videos of her flipping rocks in search of crabs and other snacks on the beach. We had to leave the bear as the timing for the eagle show is of utmost importance.

The scenery around is jaw dropping and around every corner new snow capped mountains reveals themselves. Add a little bit of fog here and there and the ordinary is transformed into dramatic scenery.

We arrived at the spot and could see a few bald eagles sitting in the trees. We did not had to wait long as some of the eagles immediately started swooping down on the floating hake. There was not a lot of eagles around maybe 30-40 or so but they were quit active for a good 20-30 min circling around, dive bombing down to grab a snack. An intensive feeding frenzy that will only get better and better for the next few weeks.

What Is the Eagle Feeding Frenzy?

Each year during late spring to early summer , (late May through early July), North Pacific Hake fish migrate through the Discovery Islands, Between Vancouver Island and BC mainland. The dramatic changes in tides is the reason for this abundance. The tides rushes in so quick that the migrating fish are rapidly brought to the surface, expanding and rapturing their swim bladders in the process. This is also called Barotrauma. Deadly to the fish but live giving to the eagles who often is still raising chicks during this time of the year. The result? An abundant, energy-rich meal, causing a chaotic feeding frenzy where dozens to hundreds of eagles can be seen soaring, diving, and feasting in a condensed area. If you're a wildlife photographer, birder, or nature enthusiast, this is a bucket-list experience you won’t want to miss.

Eagles all over

Imagine being right in the middle of it, watching hundreds of majestic eagles circling overhead, swooping down to the ocean's surface to pluck fish with razor-sharp talons. Others wait patiently on nearby trees, rocks, or logs, while juvenile eagles squabble over scraps. It’s an immersive and almost primal experience to witness.
