The Experience:
Imagine standing on a boat, surrounded by rugged coastlines and towering evergreens, as hundreds of bald eagles line the tall branches around you. Some circle overhead, then suddenly dive in powerful bursts with outstretched talons, snatching a fish right from the surface. You hear every beat of their wings.
Fish are swallowed mid-air, stolen in aerial chases, or dropped and instantly reclaimed. Juveniles challenge seasoned adults. More eagles show up, sometimes 300-400 birds. Total chaos erupts as the frenzy builds, and you're standing right in the middle of one of nature's most dramatic feeding events.
Tides & Talons gives you three full days built around this one thing, done properly. Not a single outing, but three private boat sessions across three days, so a slow morning or tricky light on Day 1 doesn't cost you the shot.
This is raw, untamed wilderness, unfolding naturally, ethically, and right before your eyes.

Tide-Timed, Every Day. Each session is timed to the tides and currents that drive the feeding frenzy, not a fixed clock.
A Real Curriculum, Not Repetition. Day 1 is about reading the light and getting comfortable with the action. Day 2 pushes into faster shutter speeds, tighter framing, and peak-action timing. Day 3 is about the shot you came for, plus a coaching session to review your best frames. This is a day to make tweaks to your camera settings and expand your creative vision. Progression, not repetition.
You're Prepared Before You Arrive. Two 1-hour group Zoom sessions before the workshop cover bird behaviour, gear, and what to expect on the water. You arrive ready, not figuring it out as you go.
Expert Eyes With You the Entire Time. Personal coaching throughout from a wildlife photographer with 16 years of photographing wildlife across Africa and North America, and guiding experiences in the field since 2017.
It Doesn't End When You Leave the Boat. A private 1-on-1 session after the workshop goes through your best moments together: what worked and how to build on it.
Who is this experience for?
Designed primarily for photographers who want to improve their bird-in-flight and action photography, but open to all levels, from first-timers to working pros. There's no pressure to perform and no expectation of a specific result, just curiosity, a hunger for the shot, respect for wildlife, and a desire to witness something genuinely rare.
Why is this event so RARE?
This extraordinary feeding frenzy only happens during a very short seasonal window each year.
Dramatic tidal changes occur when massive amounts of water are forced through narrow channels, creating fast currents, whirlpools, and upswellings.
Every year during this window, North Pacific Hake migrate through the Discovery Islands. The fast water movement is deadly to the hake. They're pushed to the surface in large numbers, their swim bladders expand, and they become disoriented, unable to dive back down. Trapped and easy prey, they trigger a concentrated feeding event that draws hundreds of bald eagles to a single area.
To align with the tides and migration, only a small number of carefully timed departures are offered each year. Once this window closes, the experience is gone until next year.

Weather and tides may shift the exact schedule. Here's what a typical three days looks like:
Day 1: Arrival & First Eagle Show. Meet at Campbell River, short safety briefing, then depart. We'll look for marine mammals on the way to the eagles and spend time with them if we can. The eagles may be in the area but not active yet. Patience is the game as the tides start rushing in. Light lunch served depending on sightings. Focus: reading the action, finding your rhythm.
Day 2: Second Eagle Show. Back on the water for a full session. New day, new possibilities. Light conditions, eagle activity, and other sea life bring a different set of opportunities. Focus: refining technique, faster action, tighter compositions, and tweaking camera settings. Evening image review together.
Day 3: Final Eagle Show & Wrap-Up. One last session on the water to bring it all together, followed by a closing coaching conversation on your best frames.
As with anything in nature, nothing is guaranteed, but three sessions gives you far better odds than one, and we'll always put you in the best position we can for stunning wildlife photography.

As a small business, I incur many expenses in preparing for a workshop. Trip dates and capacities are often limited, and accepting your booking may mean turning others away, so my terms reflect this. If you're unable to join, cancellations must be received in writing. Travel insurance is highly recommended.
Prior to 75 days before the workshop: Full refund minus 25% non-refundable deposit.
30-74 days before the workshop: No refund, but 75% available as future trip credit (valid up to 3 years).

Either works well. The ferry runs on set schedules throughout the day and is easy to plan around if you want to explore more of the area before or after. Flying into Comox or directly to Campbell River is also convenient. Either way, the scenery is worth the trip.

Comfortable for the majority of the time. Conditions can get choppy if it's windy, but the captain works to minimize that, and the water between the islands is generally smooth.

This workshop is built primarily for photographers who want to improve their bird-in-flight and action shots, but complete beginners are welcome too.

A zoom lens in the 200-600mm range will serve you best. If you have a wider lens on a second body, bring it, since some action happens just metres from the boat.
Extra batteries and plenty of memory card space are a must; you will shoot a lot.
Leave the tripod at home.

Often very close. The tidal conditions naturally bring hake toward us, and the eagles follow. We always maintain ethical, respectful distances, but nature sometimes has other plans.

Wildlife is never staged, and no sighting can ever be guaranteed. That said, this area consistently delivers remarkable eagle activity in-season, and three separate tide-timed sessions gives you far better odds than a single outing.

West Coast weather is part of the experience and can change quickly. We operate only in safe conditions, and changing light often enhances wildlife activity. A fully enclosed boat keeps you warm and dry regardless.

About your guide - Wildlife Photographer & Naturalist
I've spent 16 years in the field photographing wildlife across Africa and North America. From tracking lions at dawn in the Sabi Sands to standing on a boat while hundreds of bald eagles dive for fish ten feet away.
In that time I've developed a deep understanding of animal behaviour across two continents. I know how to read what's about to happen before it happens, position a small group for maximum access, and make sure every single person comes home with something extraordinary. Whether that's an award winning photograph or simply a memory that stays with them for the rest of their life.
I started Stephan Olivier Photography & Tours because I wanted to share these wild places with people who love them as much as I do. Not as a tour operator running groups through a checklist. As a wildlife photographer and naturalist who genuinely lives for these moments.
